lazy susan

Tried & true this week is, to my delight, a contribution from Aby Garvey of Simplify 101. I’ve taken online courses with Aby and consider her a wonderful mentor and a friend. Had I not taken her classes you might not see me for days! She’s not only a professional organiser but a brilliant and inspiring teacher, and I’ve never taken a clearer course, online or otherwise. Highly recommended. Her tried & true is a kitchen classic:

One of my very first organizing projects when I moved into my new home fourteen years ago was to organize my spices. This was many years before I became a professional organizer, so I thought the first step in any organizing project was to run to Target for a new storage solution. I opted for a two-tiered Lazy Susan. I sorted my spices in alphabetical order, and used my Dymo label maker to designate a home for each of my spices. The labels were too wide to fit the edge of the Lazy Susan so I cut them down to size using scissors. At the time it seemed like the project was taking forever…as I meticulously cut and adhered each label to the edge of my spice organizer. Fast forward fourteen years and this very same Lazy Susan and those very same labels still grace the cabinet closest to my stove. I’d say the Lazy Susan labeling project was time well spent.

The term “Lazy Susan” made its first written appearance in a Vanity Fair advertisement for a “Revolving Server or Lazy Susan” in 1917, although their existence dates back to the 18th century.

Thanks Aby! If you need help with organising your time, there’s a few days before Simplify 101’s It’s About Time class gets rolling.
